In Tamil movie Azhagiya Tamizh Magan, Vijay proves himself to be an actor who can do well with exceptional films too. Ilayathalapathy Vijay, very well tuned to the rhythm of masala movies, looks more apt for a thriller.
Guru is the character of Vijay, an athlete and Business Management Student and shriya is acting a character of Abhinaya after a couple of encounters fall in love with each other. After much voracious efforts, they convince and win over the blessings of elders on both sides. But then starts the mystery as Guru starts visualizing bizarre events that start taunting him among one which includes killing his lady love. Caring for the well-being of his love Abhinaya, he moves to Mumbai where he is pushed to a furthermore appalling situation.
Parasad is another character of Vijay (double acting). In Mumbai, it's more shocking for Guru to see Prasad who has a similar identity to him. Prasad whose only desire in life is money makes his way to Chennai while Guru meets with an accident. Abhinaya misidentifies Prasad as Guru and takes him into her house and he in turn is fascinated by the rich background and decides to marry her. When Guru gets back to Chennai, it's entirely a topsy-turvy situation since no one believes him, not even his parents and friends. Does Guru prove his innocence and change the fate that he had earlier foreseen forms the crux of the story.
There are several points of the plot which are unresolved in the end:
1) The reason why he moves to Mumbai where none of his friends or family relatives reside.
2) At times when Guru couldn't convey his true identity to his friends and Abhinayas' family, he could have approached his parents and got some solution, sharing some of the incidents of his childhood days that Prasad would not be aware of.
3) One of the major drawbacks of the film is adding the concept of hero sacrificing for the well-being of others and heroine in falling in love with him for this reason.
Though filled with few blatant garbled elements, it's a great show from the director and hats off to Vijay for accepting a different script sans heroisms avoiding masalas.
